Mentor Graphics and the Common License Consortium Eliminate Barriers to the Adoption of FPGA IP

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 2001--Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq:MENT), the leading supplier of broad-line Inventra(TM) Intellectual Property (IP) and support services, today announced its membership in the Common License Consortium(TM) (CLC).

Created in conjunction with Xilinx® and 21 members of the Xilinx AllianceCORE(TM) third-party IP provider program, the CLC is the IP industry's first organization solely focused on removing the barriers associated with licensing programmable logic IP from multiple vendors. Recognizing the industry demand for third-party IP, Mentor Graphics and other Common License Consortium members agree to accept a single set of common IP licensing terms, called the SignOnce IP License, for acquiring FPGA-based IP cores. The SignOnce IP License helps eliminate up-front licensing delays often associated with legal and contractual negotiations required when dealing with multiple IP vendors, a common challenge for today's Field Programmable System-on-Chip (FPSoC) designers.

The SignOnce IP License allows designers to create a framework for future purchases of IP and offers project-based versions of IP to meet different customer design needs. Designers who agree to the terms of the license also gain access to 450 FPGA-based IP cores including industry-leading USB 1.1, USB 2.0, T1/E1 and M8051EW IP cores from Mentor Graphics® Inventra, without having to waste design time renegotiating additional licenses from members of the Consortium.

``Participation in the CLC enhances the overall value of IP,'' said Dr. Susheel Chandra, general manager, Inventra Intellectual Property division, Mentor Graphics. ``The CLC provide designers ready access to proven IP cores. Moreover, by spending less time negotiating legal matters, designers can dedicate more time to creating competitive FPGA-based products while reducing time-to-market and over-all design schedules. Those are true productivity enhancements.''

By working together with IP standards organizations like the Virtual Socket Interface Alliance (VSIA), OpenMORE (recently donated to the VSIA) and VCX, Mentor Graphics has consistently focused on developing solutions that help the entire IP industry remove barriers to broad IP adoption and increased IP productivity. Membership in the CLC further demonstrates the Mentor Graphics commitment to IP standards.

``Mentor Graphics is a valued addition to the Common License Consortium. Our customers demand the IP leadership associated with high-quality, proven IP,'' said Rich Sevcik, senior vice president and general manager, Xilinx. ``Leveraging Mentor's reputation in IP standards and their recognized role as a broad supplier of proven IP cores contributes greatly to establishing the Consortium as an asset to the IP industry.''
